Malcolm Dobbins

"working in series, keeps me fresh"

Most people will not be surprised to learn that Malcolm has a maritime background and much of his work relates to that, although he does work on landscapes too.

Living near the Northumberland coast as well as 9 years service with the Royal Navy have inspired and influenced his work for over 40 years.

He does a lot of sketching, and uses the sometimes, cartoonish drawings, as well as digital imagery to inform the paintings.

Malcolm spent 5 years at Sunderland University studying Fine Art and gained BA(Hons) Fine Art in the early nineties. He then went on to gain MA Art & Design in Context 2005. This is where he learned good research skills and became disciplined in his working methodology.

Time spent on colour combination and designing the palette is important to him, he uses mainly analogous palettes on each series of work and says 'paintings look good hung together, when the colours in them relate to one another, it makes life a little easier for galleries too!'.

His work can be described as Abstract Realism, to a greater or lesser degree. 'By exaggerating colour, playing with perspective and finding good overall form, I come to a satisfying balance, where the image created has some physical qualities of the geographical location'. He is inspired by American Abstract Realism and in particular the work of Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline and english figurative painter, Keith Vaughan.

Spending time in harbours and on coastlines is what he likes to do, however, Malcolm has been fell walking for the past 20 odd years and draws much inspiration from his travels in Scotland and the Lake District, for his most recent series of landscape paintings.

He currently shows work in galleries in Alnwick and Felton in Northumberland; Ambleside, Edinburgh, Lauder and Perth and he has paintings in Australia, Belgium and the USA, there are collections of his work to be found in Newcastle upon Tyne, Alnwick, Edinburgh and France.
